Handling Data- Introducing Block Graphs, Pictograms and Tally Marks

(0)
There are 4 presentations in total and each of them provides a simple introduction to data handling for young learners. They present information in: block graph form tally chart form pictogram form They are ideal lesson starters as they are clear and concise. They encourage the learners to actively record answers on mini whiteboards. Answers to each slide question follows on to provide immediate correction as the learners show their whiteboard answers. This ensures whole class/group engagement in the task as well as providing immediate teacher assessment. It is easier to see who is managing the task well and those who are struggling to interpret the charts etc. The emphasis is on interpreting simple data. There is added challenge when children are asked to analyse and identify the most popular or least popular item as well as comparing two different items. These presentations offer the children some raw data that they have not had to collect themselves. This can be useful: the teacher knows that everyone has the same information without worrying about the accuracy of recording methods. So, the children can focus on analysis rather than collection at this stage. I have found this approach an ideal introduction and children are more confident when they are asked to interpret data more independently. I have uploaded several jpg files so teachers can peruse the resources more comprehensively. I hope that your children enjoy these active tasks. I would be delighted if feedback was provided.

List Poetry - My Magic Purse

(0)
This clear, concise and colourful presentation leads the learners step by step through the composition of a list poem based on a 'magic purse' theme. There is a grammar element throughout with an emphasis on nouns, adjectives and 'ing' verbs. I have found a poetry context an effective way to embed incidental grammar teaching in class. Although the outcome is a simple list poem, it can easily be differentiated for older learners. This would involve extending each line using e.g. adverbs or an additional clause. I have included the extension task for older learners on the latter part of the presentation . I have also provided pro formas for the children to use for their initial draft before they revise, edit and improve.

Assessment of Writing - Comprehensive ready made writing comments on printable labels

(0)
These presentations provide a comprehensive pack of writing comments based on Assessment for Learning principles. The comments describe the positive features in relation to the learning objective and clarity of the writing. For some children, it is advisable to give one positive comment and one suggestion for improvement. The comments remind children about the learning objectives and allow group, class or individual feedback to ensue easily. They deal with the children’s writing performance (both strengths and weaknesses). In addition they observe and recommend a strategy that would improve their writing. They are mostly genre specific but also include comments about technical skills and punctuation. PRINTING THE LABELS (L 7162 & L7163) It is easy to download Avery Wizard (free). It will appear on your top menu bar. Open one of my PowerPoint presentation with comments - strengths /how to improve  Open a blank Word document  Click on Avery Wizard  Choose either code (L 7162 & L7163)  Select comment from PowerPoint presentation  Paste onto Avery label and follow instructions to finish  Page of labels ( 16 or 14) will appear on word document - just like that! I have included several documents that are already transferred to Avery label format for easy printing - Code L7162 ( 16 labels to a page) & Code L7163 ( 14 labels to a page). If you are looking for a range of writing comments to scaffold and suggest improvements- this should do the trick.

This pack contains a comprehensive presentation of the narrative/legend 'The Pied Piper'. I have included thumbnails that show some of the tasks included as well as the complete presentation. It details the complete story with illustrations and teaching notes provided for each slide. It has sound effects as an additional feature. Within the presentation there are a variety of literacy 'follow on' tasks that learners could complete after familiarisation with the story and related vocabulary. The tasks are varied with active learning ,some written outcomes as well as speaking and listening outcomes. This story is like most fairy tales a wonderful experience for children to revisit the past and has magic and mystery within. My learners have always thoroughly enjoyed it and it is wonderful for discussion because of the unique and unexpected ending. Whiteboard 'quick fire' tasks are within the PowerPoint as well as some online links for further exploration.

Poetry and Early Grammar - A Fun Combination!

This presentation contains a complete poetry lesson based on days of the week . A tutorial in PowerPoint that provides several examples of poetic composition with a grammar focus on Proper Nouns and Adjectives. It can be amended and extended easily to include adverbs and similes for older learners as well as adapted for months of the year. It can be also themed if required e.g. seasonal sentences. The clear structure provides a writing frame for more hesitant writers and can be easily extended for more secure learners. 'Active Task' opportunities are given throughout the lesson to engage children with the grammar points and composition of each line. I have provided clear learning intentions and the success criteria for display and reference. In addition, I have provided an editing sheet so the teacher can clearly outline what is needed to be successful as well as a smaller version for the children to use . There is also pictorial prompt bank provided to support less secure learners. I have found placing grammar within a poetry context helps reinforce teaching and learning. I have uploaded several slide shots so teachers can view the resources more fully. Totally versatile - enjoy with your young writers! I would be delighted if you would provide feedback. People and Place : City and Country List Poetry with a Grammar Focus

(0)
I created both lessons as part of my social studies syllabus - ' People and Place'. Both lessons can act as 'stand alone' units or can be used in conjunction to compare the country and city. Both lessons focus on the composition of list poems - 'In the Country' and 'In the City' with an added emphasis on grammar and word classes in particular - nouns, adjectives and 'ing' verbs. The lessons provide a meaningful context for grammar teaching as well as discussion about each place . The word choices are embedded within the composition of the poems and successfully combine grammar with poetry composition. I have included opportunities for the children to actively participate e.g. 'quick fire' whiteboard work - identifying which words are nouns, verbs or 'ing' words. Throughout both lessons, there are opportunities for discussion in pairs or trios. I have also ensured differentiation by providing an extended poetry task for more able writers as well as a supported opportunity for less able writers. Hope that you enjoy using these resources . Writing Instructions : How to Build a Snowman with Additional Tasks

This pack of resources introduces the instructions writing genre- in a ‘child friendly’ manner. The presentation clearly set out the ‘signposts’ of the genre: a) 'How to… ’ title for instructions b) What you need: c) Pictures to aid meaning for the reader d) What you do: e) Numbering each instruction This ensures that the children experience and engage with the model before attempting the independent writing task. The ‘cut and stick’ activities resources match the initial presentation and provide a scaffold for the children to read , understand, label and order instructions in an active manner. The large pictures (cut and stick) are ideal when working with a smaller group who need more support. These could be laminated . The teacher can easily demonstrate ‘step by step’ for children who need more direct teaching. I have also included the learning intentions and success criteria for the tasks as well as a self and peer editing checklist. The next presentation - ‘Poetry and Art Tasks’ provides the children with a labelling task, two snowman poems to read and enjoy , a simple snowman symmetry task and a simple ‘draw a snowman’ art task. The last presentation is on a white background to save costs when printing. Finally, the online link to the snowman song is a lively start to the lesson and should engage the children from the onset. The Magic Box by Kit Wright Poetry Pack

(1)
The imaginative poem ‘The Magic Box’ by Kit Weight provides a wonderful opportunity to appreciate, perform and compose a fantasy poem. These resources are presented beautifully to also evoke an individual written response from the learners. THE LEARNING INTENTIONS INCLUDE: to read, appreciate and perform a fantasy poem to compose verses based on the model poem to include descriptive and imaginative vocabulary within their verses Within the pack: Presentation A which provides an initial starting point to read, appreciate and perform the poem. It leads the learners through each verse and encourages them to appreciate the rich language of the poet. A web link is provided for learners to see and hear the original poet perform the poem. It also provides visuals to help the learners understand and analyse the composition. The initial written task is to compose 3 verses based on the model - learners concentrate on feelings, creatures, the natural world - What would they put in their box? Presentation B provides an opportunity to concentrate on the final 3 verses of the model poem - the ‘impossible things’ verse, what their box is made of and where they will travel in their box. I have provided opportunities for children to work with their talking partners to support their composition. The final result should be very individual poems structured on the original poem. A word mat is also provided to aid composition , a separate copy of the poem for annotation as well as a planning sheet. Within this presentation, there are slides that the teacher can use with interactive pens for shared writing to further support differentiation and an assessment checklist. I have also provided a simple comprehension task which can be used to aid comprehension of the model poem if required. There are many opportunities for incidental learning e.g. grammar and word choice particularly adjectives, powerful verbs, similes and alliteration. Additional tip : Print off nets of cubes and cuboids ( photocopiable card ) and ask children to decorate their magic boxes then assemble them. I hope your learners enjoy the poem and activities and would be delighted if you left feedback. N.B. Ideally these resources should be used over several days
